Leg 20 : The Packing Has Started !!!! Only 13 Days Before We Fly

I think these 2 tyres I have to take with me will be the last I will be  putting onto DadAss before the end of our adventure, which is in sight, we have a straight run down to Ushuaia at the bottom of Argentina, only 8400km to go,  if we don’t zig-zag too much, which we no doubt will as there is a Wine Region to the East and lots of good Beef and Lamb to eat down the centre of Argentina, so I can see us crossing the Andes in search of good food and wine.… Read More

Day 331 Tuesday 6th of August, Overland Camp to Colombian\Ecuador Border and back 275km

What a long day!!!  The last time I slept in a bed was on Sunday night, (it is now early Wednesday Morning in South Africa, 19h45 here in Ecuador) so I guess just short of 48 hours without sleep for us, (our flight on Monday was a “Day Flight” so the long haul was not conducive to getting any sleep.) Our flight on SAA promised to be a huge improvement on flying via Europe like in the past, but it started with a rude awakening when they refused to load  Rocky and I’s 3 new tyres onto the flight, “No Motor Parts” they said in spite of us having flown with tyres often, but not on SAA.… Read More

Day 332 Wednesday 7th August Ibara to Papallacata 215km via Quito

Last night we started nodding off during our German Sausage Dinner. Everyone went to bed at 20h00 and I sat there feeding the Mosquitos for a while before I went to see what bed Millsy left me in out little Tiny House;

This morning all the Over-landers and us shared stories, discussing routes and prepping for the next part of their trip, stocking with supplies and water.… Read More

Day 334 Friday 9 August Misahalli to Macau 223km

Last night the wi-fi started stuttering and I decided to rather go and join my hard working riding-buddies, sitting on the deck overlooking the river having Sun Downers :

But what I still wanted to say last night was that we had a “little navigation problem” when we tried to get to the hotel. We never book accommodation ahead of time, (mostly as we are not 100% sure which town we are staying.)… Read More

Day 335 Saturday 10th August Macas to Cuenca 253km

Last night we waited in anticipation for it to get dark as then we will see ambers shooting out the Valcano a lady told us:

This is the last we saw of it as the clouds came over it and covered it.

We were lucky to get a room at this Hosteliera (like a hotel but with Chalets.) They only have 18 rooms and only one was available, it was a suite and they could remove the lounge furniture and give us some single beds and fold-out couches, we accepted this as non of us wanted to go back into the rain.… Read More

Day 336 Sunday 11th August Cuenca to Vilcabamba 285km

When I booked our hotel on line yesterday I was expecting much more than what we got, I have fancy friends and family who stays at castles and forts and Boutique Hotels, well, last night was my 1st stay at a boutique Hotels, the Castillo de Leon Boutique hotel, and let me tell you, it was as bad as the “fancy” hotel we stayed at in Bangkok, this could not have been a 3 Star anywhere in the world.… Read More

Day 338 Tuesday 13th August San Ignatius to Cutervo 241km

Last night we caught two little “Taxis” and went up the hill to where we thought we could get a meal and a glass of wine, the view was great but the place called La Finka was more of a disco than a restaurant, and it being a Monday, there was only 3 other people. The red wine turned out to be sweet and their food was going to get fetch from somewhere as their kitchen was not open yet.… Read More

Day 339 Wednesday 14th August Cutrevo to Cajamarca 221km

We are still riding in the Northern Highlands of Peru, we refuse to turn West and head to the main road,  and the coast, which is desert, and for that we are paying the price on distance, but wow, what a ride today.

We tried eating breakfast opposite our hotel, but our order was lost in translation and we got a type of Mielie Koekie boiled inside the mielie leaves, (corn bread boiled in corn leaves)

How is this restaurant for “Abeyance”

We then went for a juice at the caravan:

We left late as Tex needed to repair his one pannier after the tumble yesterday, so while him and Pie played Panel-Beater with a piece of wood and some tools they borrowed from the contractor working on the street and spent time zipping all over town in search of the right bolts and glue the rest of us went back to the Plaza where we knew we could find proper coffee.… Read More
